APHIAPLUS Western Kenya in collaboration with the Government of Kenya (GOK) is implementing a five year project funded by USAID in Nyanza and Western provinces to increase use of quality health services, products and information and social determinants of health for improved well-being of the targeted communities and populations.
 
APHIAplus Western Kenya, in collaboration with the Ministries of Health, is currently seeking highly talented and hardworking individuals to be part of a dynamic team that will scale up access to Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) services in the Nyanza and Western provinces. 

All applicants must demonstrate an ability and eagerness to work flexibly, efficiently, diplomatically, and within a team-based environment.
 
Applications are invited for the following positions which will be hired on one year fixed contracts to work in mobile VMMC teams.
 
VMMC Surgeon 

2 Positions

The VMMC Surgeon will work under the guidance of the APHIAplus Western Kenya Technical Advisor for VMMC. S/he will serve as lead for a 4-person VMMC mobile team, and be held accountable for the team’s performance.

Duties and responsibilities
  • Perform screening and medical evaluation of clients in readiness for medical male circumcision
  • provide voluntary male medical circumcision to eligible clients as per national guidelines
  • Perform post-operative reviews for circumcised clients, including managing any complications arising from the medical circumcision and making referrals as appropriate
  • Provide supervision and support to VMMC staff working at APHIAplus Western Kenya-supported health facilities offering VMMC services.
Requirements:
  • Be in possession of a Diploma in Clinical Medicine or Nursing from a recognized medical training college
  • Be currently registered by the Clinical Officers Council/Nursing Council of Kenya
  • Be trained and certified on VMMC
  • Have at least 3 years’ experience in VMMC surgery
  • Have demonstrated capacity to serve as a team leader
VMMC Assistant Surgeon 

2 Positions

Assistant Surgeons will work as one of the team members on the mobile VMMC teams to provide quality VMMC services on a daily basis to ensure the safety of the patient at all times.

Duties and responsibilities:
  • Flexible to perform diverse clinical roles
  • Assist in the screening of clients and offer post-operative reviews
  • Ensure client safety, privacy, infection prevention challenges, and address other aspects of quality of care
  • Verify and maintain information relating to patients including filling of client forms, registers, drugs and other supplies.
Requirements:
  • Be in possession of a Kenya Registered Nurse or Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse Diploma from a recognized Medical Training College.
  • Be trained and certified on VMMC.
  • Have at least two years’ of experience in VMMC service provision
VMMC Counselor 

2 Positions

VMMC Counselors will ensure VMMC clients are fully counseled on the VMMC procedure and consent prior to undergoing surgery, and address any post-operative counseling issues that may arise during follow-up visits.

Duties and responsibilities:
  • Counsel and register all prospective VMMC clients on the procedure and other key messages as per national guidelines,
  • Ensure all prospective VMMC clients are counseled on HIV, and offer quality HIV testing to who accept
  • Liaise with other members of the VMMC mobile team to ensure all VMMC clients receive top-quality care.
  • Document client information and compile of project data
Requirements:
  • Be in possession of at least the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education
  • Be in possession of Certificate in Voluntary Counseling and Testing from NASCOP
  • Be trained and certified on VMMC
  • Have at least two years of experience in counseling VMMC clients
Infection Prevention (Hygiene) Officers 

2 Positions

Infection Prevention (Hygiene) Officers will be expected to maintain high hygiene standards for the VMMC mobile teams, as well as coordinate surgical instruments sterilization for all required supplies and equipment.

Duties and responsibilities
  • Provide leadership in management of equipment and supplies before and after VMMC services
  • Ensure a steady supply of sterile MC packs the VMMC teams
  • Ensure operating theatres, consultation rooms, and recovery areas are clean and ready for use during and after the VMMC service provision.
Requirements:
  • Be in possession of at least the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, with higher education preferred.
  • Be trained and certified on VMMC
  • Have at least one years’ experience in VMMC work
  • Demonstrate awareness of the Infection Prevention and Universal Precautions guidelines and standard operating protocols
